“The truest expression of a people is in its dances and its music”, said the famous choreographer Agnes de Mille, and Samskriti, understanding the truth of this statement, set itself the goal, in 1994, of becoming an effective cultural conduit between the East and the West, through the presentation of the best and most renowned performing artists of India to Houston audiences. Eighteen years after it was founded, Samskriti can proudly say that it has more than achieved this goal. Starting with mere performances, Samskriti has expanded its programming by including educational and informative seminars, workshops and conferences on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to different Indian art forms, conducted in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Asia Society Texas Center, and the University of Houston’s College of Arts & Sciences. Samskriti’s programs are funded in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts and the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance. Performances at the Miller Outdoor Theatre are part funded by grants from the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board
